"I need more of a diversity of people," said Hagen, model coordinator at Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia.

Posing without job benefits in front of strangers may not sound like the perfect models jobs for someone looking for full-time work, but it can help pay the bills. And at least it isn't a boring desk models job.

The pay is $15 an hour, or more than double the federal minimum wage, the hours are flexible, and for someone looking to work 12 hours or so a week, it can be a steady part-time income, Hagen said.

While more unemployed people are coming to her for editorial modeling jobs, they see it as an interim job and quit as soon as they find full-time work, she said. She's unsure why the school can't attract more minority models.

"I definitely need all varieties of models," she told me in a telephone interview. "You just can't paint one type of person forever. If you do, it gets boring."

Being able to hold a pose for 20 minutes is important, which can be difficult while standing. Models fashion should also have a good attitude and want to be there, she said. Being nude fashion models are often uncomfortable at first for new models, but they can acclimate fast, she said.

However, we were looking for proportionate bodies for both. Some guys were really bulky on the top and very narrow at the waist. Some girls were very broad at the waist and slender on the top. The beauty of the face does matter, but a perfectly right proportion has higher priority when you are showcasing live. Also the girls are all very fresh. They have never walked the ramp professionally. It's about time before they get used to it," he says.

Designer, Nachiket Barve also points out that a lot of male models this year are already aware of the international look of this season -- a lean, healthy and fit body in galleries men instead of the clichéd brawny and beefed up look. He explains, "The model's body actually adds so much to how the clothes look. It is all about the presence on the ramp and the grace with which they carry off the designs."

As a result, trousers in the 1920s grew continuously wider in the legs, leading to the development of the front crease. This allowed for a sharper look, especially in silhouette. Suspenders became a hold of the older generation as belts took over, their waist slimming feature especially made them popular. Cuffs were added to trousers, giving them a more finished look.

With mens fashion changing so dramatically, it may seem surprising to note that formal wear remained much the same for men as it had for centuries. Granted, the frock coat was replaced by the tail coat, but that was basically the only change. The jacket still had to be black, and men still had to wear a starched white shirt and bowtie in the evenings, with black trousers and black shoes. Of course, we must not forget the hat!

For centuries past, and into the 1920s, no man who had any style or manners went anywhere in public without a hat of some sort covering his head. In the summer, light straw hats or shallow stiff-brimmed hats called boaters or skimmers could be worn to meet that obligation, while in the winter, the felt fedora ruled the day. The boaters and skimmers differed only in the width of their brim. The felt fedora is best known today as a gangsters hat, but it was loved by most men because of its comfort.

Of course, other cultural icons, such as aviator Charles Lindbergh, also impacted fashion. His leather coat became popular, and many men liked to wear the scarf too. The jacket was considered a necessity, in fact, with no man of style wanting to be without one.

'America's Next Top Model' casts shorties for new season

In the real world 5'7" may not be considered short, but in the world of modeling it's the difference between landing a job and hitting the pavement.

For the upcoming season of America's Next Top Model, the protocol is a little different this time around. On cycle 13, host and mentor Tyra Banks will be coaching those girls who would ordinarily be overlooked--those who are 5'7" and under.

In the past, the show has had a minimum height requirement of 5'7". In broadening their horizons, Tyra is hoping to break barriers for women who otherwise wouldn't be considered in the modeling industry.

“There have been top super models in the past that weren’t as tall as the industry demands, like fashion icon Kate Moss, Tyra Banks mentioned during casting earlier this year. So we are changing up Top Model for Cycle 13 and making it a year for the shorter model!

The show's home network, the CW, has announced that the show will premiere with a special two-hour episode on Wednesday September 9 at 8 p.m.

Newcomer Auguste Abeliunaite could certainly testify for that, as she walked the Jil Sander Fall 2009 catwalk with tears streaming down her face – and no one seems to know what was ailing her, Grazia magazine reports.

The incident occurred, as noted, during the presentation of the advertisement model Jil Sander Fall 2009 show, when all eyes were turned away from the collection itself for a couple of minutes, and onto the seemingly distressed, sad-looking model. 16-year-old Auguste was not just sad, there were tears streaming down her face, even if it showed no emotion.

The question was inevitably asked: were the highly uncomfortable, insanely high shoes to blame? Or perhaps the slippery catwalk? The lights? And, what’s most important, as Grazia points out, did the designer notice and do anything to help the girl?

The fashion industry will not get an answer to any of these questions from Jil Sander, as several media outlets have contacted her publicist but only got “I did not see it, can’t see it in the video and no one has asked about it to anyone in the press offices” in return. Auguste’s agent, though, tried to make the best of the situation and told HeardOnTheRunway that it was a bad combination of strong lighting and light-colored eyes that made the model weep.

“She has delicate eyes. We were laughing with the casting director after the show. We love the girl. We think she is amazing. The girls of the east have sad eyes in general.” the agent said about Auguste’s extremely pale blue eyes, which were reportedly the cause for her tears. Add to that being nervous (this was Auguste’s fourth show, and she is relatively new to the industry) and the strong lights, and we have an explanation, the agent continued by adding. At the same time, he explained that other two girls went through exactly the same thing at Jil Sander’s show, but so far, no evidence of this has been found.

With all the detailed explanations that Auguste’s agent is offering the free dating media, other outlets are simply not buying it. Chances are the model was crying because of the shoes, most likely, but cases of young girls being treated badly backstage are also pretty common, so that too could be an option, Grazia seems to hint. “Maybe it’s just another model injury – we heard in London one model arrived at a casting in floods of tears after hair extensions glued on for one show had been brutally ripped off straight afterwards. Working abroad last year, he lost 6kg to strut the catwalks of Milan, but even that was not skinny enough for the Parisian scene - where lean is the new mean. "In Milan, I trimmed down to about 76kg so I would fit the clothes. I am 6'2", so for me I would say that's underweight," he says. "Paris tends to be even skinnier than Milan. You've got designers like Dior who always go for anaemic, 17-year-old bodies.

"In Milan, I was staying with a guy who modeled for Dior. He was really skinny: he looked like he was going to die. He had been put on the front page of Le Monde for an article about skinny black models and male eating disorders. But he assured me it was all totally natural."

As Sciola's size has diminished, so his catwalk stocks have climbed. The 23-year-old model and University of Melbourne media student says that three years ago he looked like a "meat head", weighing a relatively beefy 94kg with a 33-inch waist (83cm) and 42-inch chest (106cm) bulging from weight training.

"I went into Cameron's Models and they said you've got a good look, but you've got to lose weight," he says.” I thought they'd probably like that big-body look and I would get a lot of work, but gradually I found out they don't go for buff guys."

Sciola has shed up to 18kg over three years, dropping weight training and starting to jog. He eventually downsized to an 81cm waist and 99cm chest. But, in commercial modeling, slight men punch well above their weight.

"I have never really been told I've been too big, but you work it out for yourself if you are going to castings and you are not fitting the clothes," says Sciola, now back to his Australian weight of 82kg. "I don't even go to Prada castings because I know I'm not going to get the work."
