Commercial Modeling Opportunities for Editorial Models

Getting more young Vietnamese men and women into international editorial beauty contests is relatively straightforward nowadays thanks to the greater number of commercial modeling agencies and the spread of professionalism through the local fashion industry.

Half a decade ago, the Vietnam affiliate of Elite Fashion held a seeming monopoly in this regard, and the number of entrants was limited in consequence.

Back then, international pageant modeling opportunities organizers didn’t know of any local model agency other than Elite Vietnam, said Thanh Long, director of Ho Chi Minh City-based Professional Look (PL).

In the more globally minded Vietnam of today, things are different.

After Professional Look started up in 2001, dozens of editorial modeling agencies and companies sprung up to crowd the once empty scene, and perhaps half of them have since folded because of the stiff competition.

The fewer options you have, the harder it is to get the best to compete successfully at the international level, said Vu Khac Tiep, who founded Venus Fashion two years ago.

Though a latecomer to the game, Venus is already among the top three commercial modeling agencies in Vietnam and has more than 150 models on its books, including a dozen leggy foreign girls.

Name is everything
The number of invitations that a Vietnamese modeling opportunities agency gets from international beauty contests depends either on the agency’s profile and reputation, or its foreign networking ability.

We’ve been receiving more and more invitations over the past three years, said Long of Professional Look, which enters three Vietnamese girls in foreign modeling beauty contests a year on average.

If they want a Vietnamese entrant, they usually go to the well-established editorial modeling agencies with lots of models as they are in the best position to groom and otherwise support the contestants.
